uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

וּבְצַלְעִי֮

and,at,stumbling_of,my

David uses the word But here to indicate a contrast between his compassion for his enemies and their cruelty when he suffered. In your translation, indicate this contrast in a way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [However, at my stumbling]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּבְצַלְעִי֮

and,at,stumbling_of,my

David is speaking of experiencing trouble as if it were physically stumbling. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [But at my time of difficulty]

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

שָׂמְח֪וּ וְֽנֶאֱ֫סָ֥פוּ

(Some words not found in UHB: and,at,stumbling_of,my in_glee and,they_gathered gathered on,me smiters and=not I_know tore and=not ceasing )

The pronoun they refers to David’s enemies. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [my enemies rejoiced and gathered together]

Note 4 topic: translate-alternativereadings

נֵ֭כִים וְלֹ֣א יָדַ֑עְתִּי

smiters and=not (Some words not found in UHB: and,at,stumbling_of,my in_glee and,they_gathered gathered on,me smiters and=not I_know tore and=not ceasing )

The word translated as the stricken ones represents the written Hebrew text. This could refer to the mockers imitating David’s lameness as possibly described in verse 16, if vowels are used to read “deformity” instead of “food” in that verse. However, scholars have proposed that changing one vowel here would make the word “the strikers,” which seems to fit better the meaning of this verse. The UST follows that interpretation. You may want to follow the major translation in your area. Alternate translation: [the strikers I did not even know]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

קָֽרְע֥וּ וְלֹא־דָֽמּוּ

tore and=not ceasing

David is speaking of his enemies’ verbal attacks as if they physically tore at him. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [They attacked me with words and did not cease]
