כִּֽי־חִנָּ֣ם טָֽמְנוּ־לִ֭⁠י שַׁ֣חַת רִשְׁתָּ֑⁠ם חִ֝נָּ֗ם חָפְר֥וּ לְ⁠נַפְשִֽׁ⁠י

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when without_cause hid to=me pit_of their_net_of,their without_cause dug for,life_of,my )

The phrases they hid for me a pit, their net; without cause they dug for my life is a translation of the written Hebrew text. This reading, however, does not seem to make sense. Scholars have proposed that a scribe may have accidentally switched the order of the words for “pit” and “their net.” Many translations put “their net” first so that “a pit” begins the second line, and you may want to do the same. Alternate translation: [For they hid for me their net; a pit without cause they dug for my life]

David is speaking of his enemies’ schemes as if they were a pit and a net used to trap animals. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [they secretly plotted to trap me]
