Literal Version

The promised Spirit

OET Eze 36:25-27

25 Then I’ll sprinkle pure water on you so you’ll be cleaned from all of your impurities, and I’ll purify you from all your idols. 26 I’ll give you people a new heart and a new spirit in your innermost parts, and I’ll take the stony heart away from your bodies and replace it with a heart of flesh.[ref] 27 I’ll put my spirit in you and enable you Israelis to follow my instructions and keep my regulations.

OET Yhn (Jhn) 14:15-26

15 “If you all love me, you will obey my commands. 16 Then I will ask the father, and he will give you a different assistant to be with you all for this age— 17 the spirit of truth. The world can’t accept him, because it doesn’t see or know him.

18 “And I won’t leave you all here as orphans, but I’ll come back to you. 19 It won’t be long now and the world won’t see me any more, but you will see me because I’ll be alive and you all will be alive also. 20 At that time you will know that I am in my father, and you all are in me, and I am in you all.

21 “Anyone who takes my commands and obeys them, that’s the person who loves me, and anyone who loves me will be loved by my father, and I too will be loving them and will be revealing myself to them.”

22 Yehudah (Judas; Grk. Yudas) (not Yehudah Iskariot) asked, “Master, what’s going on? Why would you reveal yourself to us and not to the whole world?”

23 Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) answered, “If anyone loves me, they’ll obey my teaching, and my father will love them and we will go to that person and live with them. 24 But anyone who doesn’t love me, won’t obey my teaching. The words that you hear from me are not my own, but come from the father who sent me.

25 “I told you all this while I have been here with you all. 26 But the holy spirit, the assistant who the father will be sending with my authority, he will be teaching you everything, and will be reminding you of everything that I told you all.

OET Yhn (Jhn) 16:7-15

7 But honestly it’s for your benefit that I will leave here, because if I don’t, then the assistant won’t be coming to you. But after I’ve gone, I’ll send him to you all. 8 When he comes, he’ll scold the world about sin and teach them about righteousness and judgement— 9 about sin because they don’t believe that I was sent by God, 10 about righteousness because I am going to the father and you won’t be able to see me any longer, 11 and about judgement because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I still have a lot to tell you all, but you’re not able to handle it all right now. 13 But when the assistant comes, the spirit of truth, he will guide you in all truth because he won’t be speaking from his own thoughts, but will tell you what he’s been told, and he will explain to you what’s still going to happen. 14 He’ll be honouring me because he’ll take what is mine and will explain it to you all. 15 Everything that the father has is mine, that’s why I said he will take what is mine and explain it to you.

OET Acts 2:1-21

2 When the Day of Pentecost[ref] actually arrived, the believers met together in the same room. 2 Suddenly there was a noise in the sky that sounded like a strong wind, then it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what looked like tongues of fire that kept dividing[fn] and then settling down on each one of them. 4 In this way they were all filled with the holy spirit and began speaking in other languages as the spirit enabled them.

5 At the time, there were godly Yehudim (Jews) staying in Yerushalem (Jerusalem) that had come from other countries all around the world. 6 When they heard this noise, lots of people came to investigate but they were confused because they heard the believers talking in their own languages from around the world. 7 They were astounded and marvelled, asking, “Wow, aren’t these people talking all Galilim? 8 So how come we’re hearing them speak the languages of the countries where we were born? 9 There’s people here from Parthia, Maday (Media), Eylam, Mesopotamia, Yehudah (Judea), Kappadokia, Pontos, Asia Minor, 10 Frugia, Pamfulia, Mitsrayim (Egypt), Libya (near Kurainai (Cyrene)), and visitors from Romai, 11 Kraitai (Crete), and Arav. Some are Yehudim and some are non-Jews who’ve converted to Youdaismos. And we can hear them talking about God in our languages.” 12 Everyone was amazed and totally puzzled, asking each other, “What’s going on here?” 13 But others scoffed and said, “Ha, they’ve just had too much to drink.”

14 So the twelve stood up and Kefa (Peter; Grk. Petros) told the crowd in a loud voice, “People of Yehudah (Judea) and everyone staying in Yerushalem (Jerusalem). Listen to me so that I can explain this to you. 15 This group isn’t drunk like you’re all thinking, because it’s still mid-morning, 16 but you’re seeing what the prophet Yoel (Joel) wrote about:

17 God said, ‘In the last days I’ll pour out my spirit on all humanity—your children will tell of future events, your young men will see visions, and your old men will have dreams from God. 18 I’ll pour my spirit out on my male and female slaves and they’ll tell of future events. 19 I’ll do unusual things with the stars and planets, and also down on the earth below: blood, fire, and clouds of smoke. 20 I’ll make the sun go dark and the moon go blood red. This will happen before the great victorious day of the coming of Yahweh. 21 Then everyone who relies on the name and authority of Yahweh will be saved.’[ref]

Life and witness by the Spirit

OET Acts 1:6-8

6 So when they were next gathered together, they asked him, “Master, is this now the time when you’ll be restoring the kingdom to Yisrael (Israel)?”[fn]

7 But Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) responded to them, “You don’t need to know the times or seasons when future events will happen—it’s the father who decides all that. 8 However, you all will be receiving power when the holy spirit lands on you. Then you’ll tell people about me in Yerushalem (Jerusalem) and all across the provinces of Yehudah (Judea) and Shomron (Samaria), and all the way to the furthest parts of the planet.”[ref]

1:6 At the time of asking, Israelis were burdened under the rule and taxes of the Roman occupiers.

OET Rom 8:1-17

8 So now those who are in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) cannot be condemned,[fn] 2 because the law of the spirit of life in him freed you from the law of sin and death. 3 The law was powerless in that it was faltering through our bodies. God sent his son in a body just like our sinful bodies, and concerning sin, he condemned sin itself in the body, 4 so that for those of us who are no longer governed by physical desires, but by the spirit, the law’s just action will be fulfilled in us. 5 People who are governed by their physical desires think about physical things, but those who are governed by the spirit think about spiritual things. 6 The worldly mindset leads to death, but the spiritual mindset leads to life and peace. 7 The worldly mindset is making God your enemy because it’s not being subjected to God’s law, in fact it’s not even able to, 8 and those who are worldly aren’t able to do what pleases God.

9 And you, brothers and sisters, aren’t worldly, but are in the spirit, if indeed God’s spirit is living in you, but anyone who doesn’t have Messiah’s spirit doesn’t belong to him. 10 But if Messiah is in you, while your body is dead because of sin, your spirit has life because it’s been declared guiltless. 11 Yes, if the spirit of the one who brought Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) back to life is living in you, then the one who brought Messiah Yeshua back to life will also give life to your mortal bodies by means of his spirit living inside you.[ref]

12 So then, brothers and sisters, we don’t owe anything to our sinful natures, nor do we need to live in worldly ways. 13 If your lives, brothers and sisters, are governed by your sinful natures, you’ll die, but if you put bodily practices to death with the help of the spirit, you’ll live, 14 because everyone who’s led by God’s spirit becomes one of God’s children. 15 You didn’t receive a spirit of slavery to fear again, but rather it was the spirit of adoption as children that you received, and with his help we call out, ‘Dad, dad!’[ref] 16 God’s spirit himself agrees together with our spirit that we are God’s children, 17 and if we’re his children, then we’re also heirs, so we’ll receive an inheritance from God. That makes us fellow-heirs along with Messiah—if we’re suffering with him then we’ll also be honoured along with him.

8:1 Note that many older translations included text here that came from manuscripts from later centuries and that isn’t there in the oldest manuscripts, i.e., the additional text appears to have been added by ‘helpful’ copyists but was not original to Shaul/Paul.

OET Gal 5:16-26

16 I’ll tell you: allow yourselves to be led by the spirit, and then your earthly desires won’t triumph, 17 because our earthly desires oppose the spirit, and the spirit opposes our earthly desires—they oppose each other, so that’s why you end up doing things that you didn’t really want to do.[ref] 18 But if you’re being led by the spirit then you’re not trying to earn your way to God by obeying all of Mosheh’s (Moses) rules.

19 The actions that come from our earthly desires include: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, strife, jealousies, rages, selfish ambitions, arguing, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and other similar things which I’ve mentioned previously. And as I also said previously, the people that do these things won’t be inheriting God’s kingdom.

22 But the end result of having God’s spirit is to show love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control—none of Mosheh’s laws are against any of these! 24 And for the messiah Yeshua’s (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) apprentices, earthly desires need to be executed on a post, along with their passions and lusts. 25 If we’re being led by God’s spirit in our living, then we should also be aligning our values by the spirit. 26 We have to take care not to become conceited, not to provoke each other, and not to envy each other.

Gifts used to build others up

OET 1 Cor 12:4-27

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit,[ref] 5 and there are varieties of ministries, but the same master. 6 There are varieties of activities, but the same God works all things in everyone. 7 Now the display of the spirit’s power is given to each person in order to benefit everyone. 8 One person might be given a wise message through the spirit, and someone else given certain knowledge by the same spirit. 9 Another person might be given faith by the same spirit, and someone else given gifts of healings from that one spirit. 10 Another might be given the ability to do miracles, and someone else given prophecy. Another might be given ability to distinguish spirits, and someone else given the ability to speak other languages, and to yet another the ability to translate languages. 11 However it’s the one and the same spirit behind all those things—distributing them individually to each person as the spirit decides.

12 Just like a human body is a unit but has many parts which are all components, no matter how many, making up that one body, so too is the messiah.[ref] 13 Yes, in one spirit we were all immersed into one body, whether we were Yehudim (Jews) or Hellains (Greeks), whether slaves or free, and we all were given one spirit to drink. MEANING?

14 Yes, indeed the body is not one part, but many. 15 If your foot said, “Since I’m not a hand, I’m not part of the body,” that wouldn’t make it any less a part of the body, 16 and if your ear said, “Since I’m not an eye, I’m not part of the body,” that wouldn’t make it any less a part of the body. 17 If your whole body was an eye, how could you hear? But then, if your whole body was an ear, how could you smell anything? 18 Actually, God has placed every part in our bodies exactly where he wanted to put them. 19 If it was all just one part, how could it be a body? 20 Yes, there’s many parts, but only one body.

21 Your eye can’t tell your hand, “I don’t need you,” and your head can’t tell your feet, “I don’t need you.” 22 On the contrary, the body parts that seem to be weaker are very vital, 23 and those body parts that seem less honourable, we give them greater honour and hence our unpresentable body parts are treated with more modesty. 24 Our presentable parts don’t have any need for that, but rather God has put the body together and he gave greater honour to the lesser parts 25 so that there won’t be any division in the body, but its members should care equally for each other. 26 So if one body part is hurting, all the parts hurt as well. If one body part is honoured, then all the parts are happy together.

27 Now you all are the body of Christ, and each of you is a part of it.

OET 1 Cor 13:1-13

13 Even if I could speak in human languages as well as the languages of God’s messengers, but didn’t love others, then I’d just be like a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if have the ability of being able to prophesy and could understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I had total faith so I could tell mountains to move,[ref] but I didn’t love others, then I’m of no use to anyone. 3 Even if I gave everything I have to the poor, and even sacrifice my body so that I could boast, but didn’t love others, it wouldn’t be any use to me.

4 Love is patient and kind. It doesn’t envy others, it doesn’t boast, and it isn’t arrogant. 5 It isn’t crude, it doesn’t just care about itself, it doesn’t get angry quickly, and it doesn’t keep records about who wrongs us. 6 Love isn’t happy with disobeying God, but is happy about the truth. 7 It tolerates everything, believes everything, is always hopeful about everything, and always perseveres.

8 Love never fails, unlike prophecies that will come to nothing, languages that will die out, and knowledge that also will come to nothing, 9 because we only have partial knowledge and partial understanding of prophecy. 10 So when perfection comes, partial things will disappear.

11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, thought like a child, and reasoned like a child, but then when I became an adult, I set childish things aside. 12 In this present age, we see like fuzzy reflections in a mirror, but in the future, we’ll see God face to face. In this age, I have partial knowledge, but then it’ll be complete, just like we’ll be known completely.

13 But for now, these three continue: faith, hope, and love, but love is the greatest one of those.

OET 1 Pet 4:7-11

7 The end of everything is getting close, so make good decisions and be serious in prayer, 8 and more than anything, display genuine love to each other, because love triumphs over many sins.[ref] 9 Show hospitality to each other without grumbling. 10 Whatever gift each person has received, they should use it to serve the others as good managers of the various forms of grace God’s given us. 11 Anyone who shares wisdom that came from God or uses the strength that God’s given them to serve others needs to be honouring God through Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) the messiah. He’s the one who deserves the honour and power throughout all time.
