Here David is speaking of his enemies as if they were dogs that hunt in packs. If this image communicates well in your language, please use it. If not, you could express this as a comparison. Alternate translation: [For my enemies have surrounded me like dogs]

The Hebrew text that the ULT is translated from reads like the lion. Other ancient manuscripts have a verb (instead of the noun translated as like the lion). At one point in the process of transmission, scribes may have mistakenly changed the last letter of the verb with the meaning “they have pierced” to a different (and similar looking) letter, resulting in the word like the lion. All the ancient versions of the Old Testament, as well as the early Jewish sources have verb forms instead of the noun form like the lion. The original text probably had the verb meaning “they have pierced” instead of the noun form translated like the lion. For this reason, you may wish to use the verb “they have pierced.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use whatever form it uses.
