Zechariah
1 In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of Yahweh came to Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo, the prophet, saying, 2 “Yahweh was angry, angry with your fathers. 3 And you shall say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies: “Return to me”—the declaration of Yahweh of Armies—“and I will return to you,” says Yahweh of Armies. 4 “Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets called out, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies: “Turn now from your evil ways and your evil deeds.” ’ But they did not hear, and they did not pay attention to me”—the declaration of Yahweh.
5 “Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever?
6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? And they returned and said, ‘Just as Yahweh of Armies planned to do to us, according to our ways and according to our deeds, thus he has done with us.’ ”
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of Yahweh came to Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo, the prophet, saying,
8 I saw in the night, and behold, a man riding on a red horse, and he was standing among the myrtle trees that are in the deep valley, and behind him were red, reddish-brown, and white horses. 9 And I said, “What are these, my lord?” And the angel who was speaking with me said to me, “I will show you what these are.” 10 And the man who was standing among the myrtle trees answered and said, “These are the ones whom Yahweh has sent to walk about in the earth.” 11 And they answered the angel of Yahweh who was standing among the myrtle trees, and they said, “We have walked about in the earth, and behold, all of the earth is sitting and is at rest.”
12 And the angel of Yahweh answered and said, “Yahweh of Armies, until when will you not have compassion on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, with which you have been indignant these 70 years?” 13 And Yahweh answered the angel who was speaking with me, with good words, words of comfort. 14 And the angel who was speaking with me said to me, “Call out, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies:
“I have been jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.
15 And with a great anger I, I am angry with the nations that are at ease, for I, I was angry only a little, but they helped toward the evil.
16 Therefore, thus says Yahweh: I have returned to Jerusalem with compassions. My house will be built in her—the declaration of Yahweh of Armies—and a measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem.’
17 Again, call out, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies: “My cities will again overflow from goodness, and Yahweh will again comfort Zion, and he will again choose Jerusalem.’ ”
18 And I lifted up my eyes and I saw, and behold, four horns. 19 And I said to the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?” And he said to me, “These are the horns that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.” 20 And Yahweh showed me four craftsmen. 21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?” And he said, “These are the horns that scattered Judah, according to the mouth of a man who has not lifted up his head. And these have come to terrify them, to cast down the horns of the nations, the ones lifting up a horn against the land of Judah to scatter her.”
2 And I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, a man, and in his hand was a rope of measuring. 2 And I said, “Where are you going?” And he said to me, “To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.” 3 And behold, the angel who was speaking with me was going out, and another angel was going out to meet him. 4 And he said to him, “Run, speak to that young man, saying,
‘Jerusalem will be inhabited as open areas because of the multitude of man and beast in her midst.
5 And I, I will be for her—the declaration of Yahweh—a wall of fire all around, and for glory I will be in her midst.’ ”
6 “Woe! Woe! Flee from the land of the north”—the declaration of Yahweh—“for like the four winds of the heavens I have spread you out”—the declaration of Yahweh.
7 “Woe, Zion! Escape, you who are dwelling with the daughter of Babylon!”
8 For thus says Yahweh of Armies—after glory he has sent me to the nations that are plundering you—for the one touching you is touching the apple of his eye.
9 “For behold, I am waving my hand over them, and they will be plunder for their slaves.” And you will know that Yahweh of Armies has sent me.
10 “Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion, for behold, I am coming, and I will dwell in your midst”—the declaration of Yahweh.
11 “And many nations will join themselves to Yahweh in that day, and they will be to me for a people, and I will dwell in your midst.” And you will know that Yahweh of Armies has sent me to you.
12 And Yahweh will inherit Judah as his portion on the land of holiness, and he will again choose Jerusalem.
13 Hush, all flesh, from the face of Yahweh, for he has been roused from the dwelling place of his holiness!
3 And he made me see Joshua the high priest standing to the face of the angel of Yahweh, and the adversary standing on his right to accuse him. 2 And Yahweh said to the adversary, “May Yahweh rebuke you, the adversary, and may Yahweh who is choosing Jerusalem rebuke you. Is this not a firebrand rescued from the fire?” 3 And Joshua was clothed in filthy garments and standing to the face of the angel.
4 And he answered and said to the ones standing to the face of him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from upon him.” And he said to him, “See, I have caused your iniquity to pass away from you, and I will clothe you with fine clothing.” 5 And I said, “Let them set a clean turban on his head.” And they set the clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments, and the angel of Yahweh was standing by.
6 And the angel of Yahweh solemnly charged Joshua, saying, 7 “Thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘If you will walk in my ways, and if you will keep my charge, then you also will judge my house and also will keep my courts, and I will give to you access among these who are standing here.
8 Hear now, Joshua the high priest, you and your companions who are sitting to the face of you, for they are men of a sign, for behold, I am bringing my servant, the Branch. 9 For behold, the stone that I have set to the face of Joshua, on one stone are seven eyes. Behold, I am engraving its engraving’—the declaration of Yahweh of Armies—‘and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. 10 In that day—the declaration of Yahweh of Armies—you will call, each man to his neighbor, to under his vine and to under his fig tree.’ ”
4 And the angel who was speaking with me returned and roused me like a man who is roused from his sleep. 2 And he said to me, “What are you seeing?” And I said, “I have seen, and behold, a lampstand of gold, all of it, and its bowl on its top, and seven lamps on it, seven and seven tubes for the lamps that are on its top. 3 And two olive trees are beside it, one on the right of the bowl and one on its left.”
4 And I answered and said to the angel who was speaking with me, saying, “What are these, my lord?” 5 And the angel who was speaking with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.”
6 And he answered and said to me, saying, “This is the word of Yahweh to Zerubbabel, saying, ‘Not by might and not by power, but by my Spirit,’ says Yahweh of Armies. 7 Who are you, great mountain, to the face of Zerubbabel? You will become a plain! And he will bring out the top stone with shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!’
8 And the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 9 ‘The hands of Zerubbabel have founded this house, and his hands will complete it.’ And you will know that Yahweh of Armies has sent me to you.
10 For who has despised the day of small things? And they will rejoice and will see the stone of tin in the hand of Zerubbabel. These seven are the eyes of Yahweh; they are roaming through all of the earth.”
11 And I answered and said to him, “What are these two olive trees on the right of the lampstand and on its left?”
12 And I answered a second time and said to him, “What are the two branches of the olives that are beside the two pipes of gold that are emptying the gold from upon them?” 13 And he said to me, saying, “Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.”
14 And he said, “These are the two sons of the fresh oil, the ones standing before the Lord of all of the earth.”
5 And I returned and I lifted up my eyes and I saw, and behold, a flying scroll. 2 And he said to me, “What are you seeing?” And I said, “I am seeing a flying scroll. Its length is 20 cubits and its width is ten cubits.” 3 And he said to me, “This is the curse that is going out over the face of all of the earth, for everyone who is stealing from this side, according to it, has been cleared, and everyone who is swearing from this side, according to it, has been cleared. 4 I have brought it out”—the declaration of Yahweh of Armies—“and it will come to the house of the thief and to the house of the one swearing by my name to falsehood. And it will spend the night in the midst of his house and will consume it, and its timbers, and its stones.”
5 And the angel who was speaking with me went out, and he said to me, “Lift up now your eyes and see what this is that is going out.” 6 And I said, “What is it?” And he said, “This is the ephah that is going out.” And he said, “This is their eye in all of the earth.” 7 And behold, a disk of lead was being lifted up, and this was one woman sitting in the midst of the ephah. 8 And he said, “This is the wickedness.” And he threw her into the midst of the ephah, and he threw the stone of lead to its mouth.
9 And I lifted up my eyes and I saw, and behold, two women were going out, and wind was in their wings. And they had wings like the wings of the stork. And they lifted up the ephah between the earth and between the heavens. 10 And I said to the angel who was speaking with me, “Where are they taking the ephah?” 11 And he said to me, “To build for her a house in the land of Shinar. And it will be established, and she will be set down there on her base.”
6 And I turned and I lifted my eyes and I saw, and behold, four chariots coming out from between two mountains. And the mountains were mountains of bronze. 2 In the first chariot were red horses, and in the second chariot were black horses, 3 and in the third chariot were white horses, and in the fourth chariot were spotted, strong horses. 4 And I answered and said to the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these, my lord?”
5 And the angel answered and said to me, “These are the four winds of the heavens going out from standing before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The chariot in which are the black horses is going out to the land of the north, and the white ones went out after them, and the spotted ones went out to the land of the south.”
7 And the strong ones went out and sought to go to walk about in the earth. And he said, “Go, walk about in the earth.” And they walked about in the earth.
8 And he called out to me and spoke to me, saying, “See, the ones going out to the land of the north have caused my spirit to rest in the land of the north.”
9 And the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 10 “Take from the exiles— from Heldai, and from Tobijah, and from Jedaiah— and you, you shall come on that day, and you shall come to the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah, who have come from Babylon. 11 And you shall take silver and gold, and you shall make crowns, and you shall set them on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. 12 And you shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies, saying:
Behold, a man— Branch is his name— and from his place he will sprout,
and he will build the temple of Yahweh.
13 And he, he will build the temple of Yahweh,
and he, he will bear glory
and he will sit and rule on his throne.
And he will be a priest on his throne,
and a counsel of peace will be between the two of them.’
14 And the crowns will be for Helem and for Tobijah and for Jedaiah and for Hen the son of Zephaniah, as a memorial in the temple of Yahweh. 15 And those far off will come and build in the temple of Yahweh, and you will know that Yahweh of Armies has sent me to you. And this will happen if listening, you will listen to the voice of Yahweh your God.”
7 And it happened in the fourth year of Darius the king, the word of Yahweh came to Zechariah, on the fourth day of the ninth month, in Kislev. 2 Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Melek and his men to beg before the face of Yahweh, 3 saying to the priests who were at the house of Yahweh of Armies, and to the prophets saying, “Should I mourn in the fifth month by means of a fast, as I have done these many years?”
4 And it happened that the word of Yahweh of Armies came to me, saying,
5 “Speak to all the people of the land and to the priests and say, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month for these seventy years, were you fasting, fasting for me? 6 When you ate and when you drank, did you not eat and drink for yourselves? 7 Were these not the words that Yahweh proclaimed by the hand of the former prophets, when you still inhabited Jerusalem and the surrounding cities in prosperity and were settled in the Negev, and the foothills to the west?’ ”
8 The word of Yahweh came to Zechariah, saying, 9 “Thus says Yahweh of Armies saying, ‘Judge with true justice, and covenant faithfulness, and mercy. Let each man do this for his brother. 10 And the widow and orphan, the foreigner, and the poor person—do not oppress them, and let a man not plot evil against his brother in your heart.’ 11 But they refused to heed and gave a stubborn shoulder. Their ears were heavy from hearing. 12 They made their heart as rock to keep from hearing the law and the words that Yahweh of Armies had sent by his Spirit by the hand of the former prophets. And great rage came from Yahweh of Armies. 13 ‘It happened that as when he called, and they did not listen, so they called, but I did not listen,’ says Yahweh of Armies. 14 ‘And I scattered them with a whirlwind to all the nations that they had not seen, and the land was made desolate after them from anyone passing through or returning. And they had made the land of desire into a wasteland.’ ”
8 And the word of Yahweh of Armies came, saying, 2 “Thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘I have been jealous for Zion with a great jealousy, and I have been jealous for her with great heat.’ 3 Thus says Yahweh, ‘I will return to Zion and will live in the midst of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem will be called the city of faithfulness and the mountain of Yahweh of Armies the mountain of holiness!’
4 Thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘Old men and old women will again sit in the open areas of Jerusalem, and a man with his staff in his hand from a multitude of days. 5 And the open areas of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing in its open areas.’
6 Thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘If it is wonderful in the eyes of the remnant of this people in those days, will it also be wonderful in my eyes?—the declaration of Yahweh of Armies.’ 7 Thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘Behold, I am saving my people from the land of the sunrise and from the land of the setting of the sun. 8 And I will bring them, and they will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem, and they will be to me as a people, and I, I will be to them as God in faithfulness and in righteousness.’
9 Thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘May your hands be strong, you who are hearing in these days these words from the mouth of the prophets who were there on the day when the house of Yahweh of Armies was founded, the temple to be built. 10 For to the face of those days, the wages of man were not, and the wages of the beast, there were none. And for the one going out and for the one coming in there was no peace from the enemy, and I sent every man, each against his neighbor. 11 But now, I will not be to the remnant of this people like the former days’—the declaration of Yahweh of Armies. 12 ‘For there will be the seed of peace: the vine will give its fruit, and the land will give its produce, and the heavens will give their dew. And I will cause the remnant of this people to inherit all these things. 13 And it will be just as you were a curse in the nations, house of Judah and house of Israel, so I will save you and you will be a blessing. Do not fear; let your hands be strong!’
14 For thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘Just as I planned to cause harm to you when your fathers angered me’—says Yahweh of Armies—‘and did not relent, 15 thus I have turned, I plan in these days to cause good to Jerusalem and the house of Judah! Do not fear! 16 These are the things that you must do: Speak truth, each with his neighbor. Judge in your gates with faithfulness and a judgement of peace. 17 And a man shall not plan evil within his heart against his neighbor, and oath of falseness you shall not love—for all of these are that which I hate!’—the declaration of Yahweh.”
18 And the word of Yahweh of Armies came to me, saying, 19 “Thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘The fast of the fourth, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth months will become into joy, and into gladness, and into happy festivals for the house of Judah! And love faithfulness and peace!’ 20 Thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘Yet it will happen that nations and the inhabitants of many cities will come. 21 The inhabitants of one city will go to another saying, “Let us quickly go to beg the face of Yahweh and to seek Yahweh of Armies! I, I also will go” 22 Many people and mighty nations will come to seek Yahweh of Armies in Jerusalem and beg the face of Yahweh!’ 23 Thus says Yahweh of Armies: ‘In those days there will be ten men from every language of the nations who will grab, and they will grab the hem of a man of Judah saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard God is with you!” ’ ”
9 The burden of the word of Yahweh concerning the land of Hadrach and Damascus, its resting place; for the eye of mankind and all the tribes of Israel are toward Yahweh. 2 And also Hamath borders on it, and Tyre and Sidon, for they are very wise.
3 And Tyre has built herself a stronghold and heaped up silver like dust and refined gold like the mud of the streets. 4 Behold! The Lord will dispossess her and strike down her wealth on the sea, and she, she will be devoured by fire.
5 Ashkelon will see and be afraid! Gaza also will writhe greatly! Ekron also, for her hope has dried up! And the king will perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon will not be inhabited! 6 And a mixed people will dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. 7 And I will remove his blood from his mouth and his abominations from between his teeth, and he also will remain for our God, and he will be like a clan in Judah, and Ekron will be like a Jebusite.
8 And I will camp around my house as a guard against the one passing through and against the one returning, and no oppressor will pass over them again, for now I have seen with my eyes!
9 Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold! Your king is coming to you; righteous and being saved is he, humble and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the son of female donkeys.
10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem, and the bow of war will be cut off, and he will speak peace to the nations, and his dominion will be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you also, by the blood of your covenant I have set free your prisoners from the pit in which there is no water. 12 Return to the stronghold, prisoners of hope! Even today I am declaring that I will return double to you, 13 for I have bent for myself Judah, a bow; I have filled Ephraim. And I will rouse your sons, Zion, against your sons, Greece, and I will make you like the sword of a mighty man.
14 And Yahweh will appear over them, and his arrow will go out like the lightning, and the Lord Yahweh will blow on the trumpet and will go with the storms of the south. 15 Yahweh of Armies will defend them, and they will devour and will subdue the stones of the sling, and they will drink and roar as with wine, and they will be full like the bowl, like the corners of the altar.
16 And Yahweh their God will save them on that day, like the flock of his people, for they are the stones of a crown gleaming over his land. 17 For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! Grain will make the young men flourish, and new wine the virgins.
10 Ask for rain from Yahweh in the season of the spring rain—
Yahweh who makes thunderstorms—
and he gives rain showers to everyone
and vegetation in the field.
2 For household idols speak falsely; the diviners envision a lie;
they tell deceitful dreams and give empty comfort,
so they wander like sheep and suffer because there is no shepherd.
3 “My wrath burns against the shepherds; it is the male goats—the leaders—that I will punish. Yahweh of hosts will also attend to his flock, the house of Judah, and make them like his warhorse in battle! 4 From Judah will come the cornerstone; from him will come the tent peg; from him will come the war bow; from him will come every ruler together.[fn] 5 They will be like warriors who trample their enemies into the mud of the streets in battle; they will make war, for Yahweh is with them, and they will shame those who ride warhorses. 6 I will strengthen the house of Judah and save the house of Joseph; for I will restore them and have mercy on them. They will be as though I had not cast them off, for I am Yahweh their God, and I will respond to them. 7 Then Ephraim will be like a warrior, and their hearts will rejoice as with wine; their children will see and rejoice. Their hearts will rejoice in me!
8 I will whistle for them and gather them, for I will rescue them, and they will become as great as they previously were! 9 I sowed them among the peoples, but they will remember me in distant countries, so they and their children will live and return. 10 For I will restore them from the land of Egypt and gather them from Assyria. I will bring them to the land of Gilead and Lebanon until there is no more room for them. 11 I will pass through the sea of their affliction; I will strike the waves of that sea and will dry up all the depths of the Nile. The majesty of Assyria will be brought down, and the scepter of Egypt will go away from the Egyptians. 12 I will strengthen them in myself, and they will walk in my name—this is Yahweh’s declaration.”
11 Open your doors, Lebanon, that fire may devour your cedars!
2 Lament, cypress trees, for the cedar trees have fallen! What was majestic has been devastated!
Lament, you oaks of Bashan, for the strong forest has gone down.
3 The shepherds howl, for their glory has been destroyed!
The voice of the young lions’ roar, for the pride of the Jordan River has been devastated!
4 This is what Yahweh my God says, “Like a shepherd, watch over the flock set aside for slaughter! 5 (The ones who buy them slaughter them and are not punished, and the ones who sell them say, ‘Blessed be Yahweh! I have become rich!’ for the shepherds working for the flocks’ owners have no pity on them.) 6 For I will no longer pity the inhabitants of the land!—this is Yahweh’s declaration. See! I myself am about to turn over every person into the hand of his neighbor and into the hand of his king, and they will destroy the land and none of them will I deliver them from their hand.” 7 So I became the shepherd of the flock marked for slaughter, for those who dealt in sheep. I took two staffs; one staff I called “Favor” and the other I called “Unity.” In this way I shepherded the flock. 8 In one month I destroyed the three shepherds. I became impatient with them, and they also hated me. 9 Then I said to the owners, “I will not work as a shepherd for you any longer. The sheep that are dying—let them die; the sheep that are being destroyed—let them be destroyed. Let the sheep that remain each eat the flesh of its neighbor.” 10 So I took my staff “Favor” and broke it to break the covenant that I had made with all of my tribes. 11 On that day the covenant was broken, and those who dealt in sheep and who were watching me knew that Yahweh had spoken. 12 I said to them, “If it seems good to you, pay me my wages. But if not, do not do it.” So they weighed out my wages—thirty pieces of silver. 13 Then Yahweh said to me, “Deposit the silver in the treasury, the excellent price at which they valued you!” So I took the thirty pieces of silver and deposited them in the treasury in the house of Yahweh. 14 Then I broke my second staff, “Unity,” to break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.
15 Yahweh said to me, “Again, take the equipment of a foolish shepherd for yourself, 16 for see, I am about to set in place a shepherd in the land. He will not care for the perishing sheep. He will not seek out the sheep gone missing, nor heal the crippled sheep. He will not feed the sheep that are healthy, but will eat the flesh of the fattened sheep and will tear off their hooves.
17 Woe to the worthless shepherd who forsakes the flock!
May the sword come against his arm and his right eye!
May his arm wither away and may his right eye become blind!”
12 This is a declaration of Yahweh’s word concerning Israel—a declaration of Yahweh, who stretched out the skies and laid the foundation of the earth, who fashions the spirit of mankind within man, 2 “See, I am about to make Jerusalem into a cup causing all the peoples surrounding her to stagger about. It will also be like that for Judah during the siege against Jerusalem. 3 On that day, I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. Anyone trying to lift that stone will hurt himself very much, and all the nations of the earth will gather against that city. 4 On that day—this is Yahweh’s declaration—I will strike every horse with confusion and its rider with madness. Over the house of Judah I will open my eyes, but every horse of the peoples I will strike with blindness. 5 Then the leaders of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are our strength because of Yahweh of hosts, their God.’ 6 On that day I will make the leaders of Judah like firepots among wood and like a flaming torch among standing grain, for they will consume all the surrounding peoples on their right and on their left. Jerusalem will again live in her own place.” 7 Yahweh will save the tents of Judah first, so that the honor of the house of David and the honor of those who live in Jerusalem may not be greater than the rest of Judah. 8 On that day Yahweh will be the defender of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on that day those who are weak among them will be like David, while the house of David will be like God, like the angel of Yahweh in front of them. 9 “On that day that I will begin to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
10 But I will pour out a spirit of compassion and pleading on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so they will look on me, the one they have pierced. They will mourn for me, as one mourns for an only son; they will bitterly lament for him like those who lament the death of a firstborn son. 11 On that day the laments in Jerusalem will be like the laments at Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 The land will mourn, each clan separate from other clans. The clan of the house of David will be separate and their wives will be separate from the men. The clan of the house of Nathan will be separate and their wives will be separate from the men. 13 The clan of the house of Levi will be separate and their wives will be separate from the men. The clan of the Shimeites will be separate and their wives will be separate from the men. 14 Every clan of the remaining clans—each clan will be separate and the wives will be separate from the men.”
13 “On that day a fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for impurity. 2 And it will be on that day”—the declaration of Yahweh of Armies—“I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered. And also the prophets and the spirit of uncleanness I will cause to pass away from the land. 3 And it will be, if a man still prophesies, then his father and his mother, the ones who bore him, will say to him, ‘You will not live, for you have spoken falsehood in the name of Yahweh.’ And his father and his mother, the ones who bore him, will pierce him when he prophesies.
4 And it will be on that day, the prophets will be ashamed, each man of his vision, when he prophesies. And they will not put on a cloak of hair in order to deceive. 5 And he will say, ‘I am not a prophet. I am a man working the ground, for a man acquired me from my youth.’
6 And someone will say to him, ‘What are these wounds between your hands?’ And he will say, ‘These are the wounds with which I was struck in the house of the ones loving me.’
7 “Sword, awake against my shepherd,
and against the man, my companion”
—the declaration of Yahweh of Armies—
“Strike the shepherd,
and the flock will be scattered!
And I will turn my hand against the little ones.
8 And it will be in all the land”—the declaration of Yahweh—
“two parts in it will be cut off and will expire,
and the third will be left in it.
9 And I will bring the third into the fire,
and I will refine them as one refines the silver,
and I will test them as one tests the gold.
He will call on my name,
and I will answer him.
I will say, ‘He is my people,’
and he will say, ‘Yahweh is my God.’
14 Behold! A day for Yahweh is coming when your plunder will be divided in your midst. 2 For I will gather every nation against Jerusalem for battle and the city will be captured. The houses will be plundered and the women raped. Half of the city will go out into captivity, but the remainder of the people will not be cut off from the city. 3 But Yahweh will go out and wage war against those nations as when he wages war on the day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is beside Jerusalem to the east. The Mount of Olives will be split in half between the east and the west by a very great valley and half of the mountain will go back toward the north and half toward the south. 5 Then you will flee down the valley between Yahweh’s mountains, for the valley between those mountains will reach to Azel. You will flee just as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah. Then Yahweh my God will come and all the holy ones will be with him. 6 On that day there will be no light, but no cold or frost either. 7 On that day, a day known only to Yahweh, there will no longer be day or night, for the evening will be a time of light. 8 On that day living waters will flow out of Jerusalem. Half of them will flow to the eastern sea and half to the western sea, in summer and in winter.
9 Yahweh will be king over all the earth. On that day there will be Yahweh, the one God, and his name alone. 10 All the land will be like the Arabah, from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. Jerusalem will continue to be raised up and remain in its own place, from the Benjamin Gate to the place where the first gate was, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses. 11 The people will live in Jerusalem and there will be no more complete destruction from God against them. Jerusalem will live in safety.
12 This will be the plague with which Yahweh will attack all the peoples that waged war against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot away even as they are standing on their feet. Their eyes will rot in their sockets and their tongues will rot in their mouths. 13 On that day that great fear from Yahweh will come among them. Each one will seize the hand of another, and the hand of one will be raised up against the hand of another. 14 Judah will also fight against Jerusalem. They will gather the wealth of all the surrounding nations—gold, silver, and fine clothes in great abundance. 15 A plague will also be on the horses and the mules, the camels and the donkeys, and on every animal in those camps will also suffer that same plague.
16 Then it will happen that all who remain in those nations that came against Jerusalem will instead go up from year to year to worship the king, Yahweh of hosts, and to keep the Festival of Shelters. 17 It will happen that if anyone from all the nations of the earth does not go up to Jerusalem to worship the king, Yahweh of hosts, then Yahweh will not bring rain on them. 18 If the nation of Egypt does not go up, then they will not receive rain. A plague from Yahweh will attack the nations that do not go up to keep the Festival of Shelters. 19 This will be the punishment for Egypt and the punishment for every nation that does not go up to keep the Festival of Shelters. 20 But on that day, the bells of the horses will say, “Set apart to Yahweh,” and the basins in Yahweh’s house will be like the bowls before the altar. 21 For every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be set apart to Yahweh of hosts and everyone who brings a sacrifice will eat from them and boil in them. On that day traders will no longer be in the house of Yahweh of hosts.
