Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

אֱלֹהַ֣יִךְ צִ֭יּוֹן לְדֹ֥ר וָדֹ֗ר

God_of,your Tsiyyōn/(Zion) to,a_generation and,a_generation

The psalmist is leaving out the verb that would naturally appear in this phrase. The reader can supply it from the first part of the verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply this verb explicitly. Alternate translation: [your God, Zion, reigns to generation and generation]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / apostrophe

אֱלֹהַ֣יִךְ צִ֭יּוֹן

God_of,your Tsiyyōn/(Zion)

The psalmist is speaking to the city of Zion, which cannot hear him. He is doing this to express how strongly he feels about Yahweh’s eternal reign. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate these words as if he were speaking directly to the people about Zion. Alternate translation: [the God of Zion]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

לְדֹ֥ר וָדֹ֗ר

to,a_generation and,a_generation

The psalmist is using the phrase to generation and generation as a common expression of the culture to mean “forever”. If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [for all time]

Note 4 topic: translate-transliterate

הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ

praise Yah

The words Hallelu Yah are Hebrew words, containing a plural command to praise Yahweh. You will need to decide if you will use these words in their Hebrew form or if you will instead translate the meaning into your language. Either approach has broad support. If you use the Hebrew words, you could spell them the way that they sound in your language and then put the translation in a footnote. Alternate translation: [Halleluia] or [Praise Yah]

Note 5 topic: translate-names

יָֽהּ

Yah

Yah is a shortened form of the name “Yahweh,” the God of Israel. You could use the full name if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [Yahweh]
