Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / imperative

ה֤וֹרֵ֥נִי יְהוָ֗ה דַּ֫רְכֶּ֥ךָ וּ֭נְחֵנִי בְּאֹ֣רַח מִישׁ֑וֹר

teach,me YHWH (Some words not found in UHB: teach,me YHWH way_of,your and,lead,me in,a_path_of level because_of enemies_of,my )

Here David uses imperative forms, but he is making polite requests rather than giving commands. If the imperative form does not communicate a polite request in your language, then use a form that communicates polite requests. It may be helpful to add an expression such as “please” to make this clear. Alternate translation: [Please teach me your way, Yahweh, and please lead me on a level path]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ה֤וֹרֵ֥נִי & דַּ֫רְכֶּ֥ךָ

teach,me & (Some words not found in UHB: teach,me YHWH way_of,your and,lead,me in,a_path_of level because_of enemies_of,my )

See how you translated the similar phrase “make me know your ways” in [25:4](../025/004.md).

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּ֭נְחֵנִי בְּאֹ֣רַח מִישׁ֑וֹר

and,lead,me (Some words not found in UHB: teach,me YHWH way_of,your and,lead,me in,a_path_of level because_of enemies_of,my )

Here David is speaking as if Yahweh would lead him on a level path. He is picturing his life as if it were a journey and asking Yahweh to guide him along a smooth, safe route. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly as in the UST.

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וּ֭נְחֵנִי בְּאֹ֣רַח מִישׁ֑וֹר לְ֝מַ֗עַן שׁוֹרְרָֽי

and,lead,me (Some words not found in UHB: teach,me YHWH way_of,your and,lead,me in,a_path_of level because_of enemies_of,my )

David is using because of my enemies to give the reason for the result that lead me on a level path describes. If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [and because of my enemies, lead me on a level path]
