Here, they could refer to: (1) Yahweh’s people, whom the psalmist describes in verses 36–38. Alternate translation: [Then those people become few and become low] or (2) The enemies of Yahweh’s people. Alternate translation: [Then their enemies become few and become low]

The psalmist is speaking of people as if they could physically become low. He means that they become humbled or brought down in status and circumstances. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and become humbled]

The word from indicates that what follows is a reason for the result that came before. The people became few and low because of the distress, evil, and sorrow they experienced. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a reason for what came before. Alternate translation: [because of distress of evil and sorrow]

The psalmist is using the possessive form to describe a distress that is characterized by evil and sorrow. If a speaker of your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could express this idea in another way. Alternate translation: [from distressing evil and sorrow]
