77:16 The word used here relates to the deep mentioned in Genesis 1:2. The image also recalls the parting of the Red Sea during the Exodus, an allusion confirmed in verse 20.

76.17 They_saw. CAS. Pause_in_music. Which in/into/on to_the_world Christ/Messiah works, explains. AUG. As_if would_say: Since mark you_did virtue, or through him they_saw you(sg), o God Father/Chief, or, you(sg), o Christ, who/which you_are virtue and arm(n), etc.

Asaph is repeating the phrase the waters saw you in order to intensify his expression of the idea it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [The waters surely saw you, God]

Starting in this verse and extending through verse 19, Asaph is speaking of God’s powerful actions during the exodus as if they were a storm, with thunder representing God’s voice, arrows and lightning representing God’s power striking out, and the waters and the earth reacting in fear by trembling. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express these images with a comparison or state the meaning plainly.

Asaph is speaking of the waters as if they were living things that could see and respond with fear. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [When you, God, came to the waters, they moved back in fear] or [The waters moved away from you, God, as if they saw you]

These two phrases, they trembled and the depths shook, mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. Hebrew poetry was based on this kind of repetition, and you may want to show this to your readers by including both phrases in your translation. If it is helpful, you could connect the phrases in a way that shows that the second phrase is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. Alternate translation: [and they trembled, even the depths shook]
