The word the ULT translates as ropes refers to ropes or “bonds” that constrain a person. Here, the author is speaking of struggles or pains as if they were ropes or “bonds” that constrain a person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning with an equivalent expression or you could state the meaning plainly.
