Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Clouds and darkness surround him

(Some words not found in UHB: clouds and,thick_darkness [are]_around_of,him righteousness and,justice foundation_of his_throne_of,his )

Alternate translation: “We cannot see him; it is as if he were sitting in the dark with clouds all around him”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne

(Some words not found in UHB: clouds and,thick_darkness [are]_around_of,him righteousness and,justice foundation_of his_throne_of,his )

The word “throne” is a metonym for the deeds and words of the one who sits on it. The psalmist speaks as if righteousness and justice were physical objects that made the throne secure. Alternate translation: “He is righteous and just in everything he does” or “He is able to rule because he rules righteously and justly” (See also: figs-metaphor)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

the foundation of his throne

(Some words not found in UHB: clouds and,thick_darkness [are]_around_of,him righteousness and,justice foundation_of his_throne_of,his )

Here “the foundation of his throne” refers to how Yahweh rules his kingdom.
