This page contains selected passages from the Open English Translation with the passage from the OET Readers’ Version on the left, and the OET Literal Version on the right. Minimal commentary is included (only some headings)—our aim is simply to conveniently list the passages in one place so that our readers can make up their own minds about what the writer of the passage was intending to communicate.
9 We’re not able to repay God for the thankfulness that we have about you, because we are certainly thrilled in God’s presence because of you all.
10 Day and night we’re strongly requesting God that we’ll be able to go and see you all again, and to teach anything that’s lacking in your faith, 11 and that God our father himself and our master Yeshua might show us how we could get to you all.
12 May the master increase your numbers and give you all an excess of love towards each other and toward everyone, just like we also have toward all of you, 13 in order to strengthen your faith and make you blameless and spotless before our father God, when our master Yeshua comes with all his holy people. May it be so.
21:1 The return of humanity’s child
25 [ref]“There’ll be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and anguish in countries around the world as they’re puzzled by the noise of the sea and surf. 26 People will faint from fear and worry about what’s happening to the planet, because the powers in the universe[fn] will be shaken. 27 [ref]Then they’ll see humanity’s child coming down in a cloud with power and great brightness. 28 But when these things start to happen, stand straight and look upwards, because your new lives of freedom will be about to begin.”
21:29 Recognising the end by the season
29 Then he told them a parable: “Watch the fig tree and all the trees. 30 Whenever you see shoots start appearing, you know that summer is not far away. 31 Similarly when you all see those things starting to happen, you will know that God’s kingdom is close.
32 “I can assure you all that that generation certainly won’t pass away until all those events come to an end. 33 The sky and the earth will pass away, but my statements will certainly not pass away.
21:34 Stay alert and pray
34 Watch your own lives in case you end up focused on partying and drunkenness and day-to-day living, because then that sudden end might snap on you 35 like an animal trap, because it will hit everyone all over the planet. 36 No matter what the season, stay alert, asking God that you’ll all have the strength to escape all those things going to happen, and at the end to be able to stand in front of humanity’s child.”
21:26 This could possibly be referring to a shake-up of spiritual powers, but more likely refers to the physical universe from our moon and solar system outwards.
3 “Listen, I’m about to send my messenger and he’ll prepare the path ahead of me. Then the master who you’re all looking for will suddenly come to his temple, yes, the messenger who you are all happy about—the party to the agreement—he’ll come,” says army-commander Yahweh.[ref] 2 But who could survive it when he comes? Who can stand when he appears, because he’ll be like the refiner’s fire and like the cleaners’ powerful soap?[ref] 3 Yahweh will act as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify Levi’s descendants the priests—yes, he’ll refine you all with fire like gold and silver, and you’ll bring offerings to him that are acceptable. 4 After that, the offerings of the people of Yudah and Yerushalem will be pleasing to Yahweh, as in ancient times, and as in previous years.
1:1 Zacharias’ prophecy about Yohan
67 Then the boy’s father, Zacharias, became filled with the holy spirit and prophesied,
68 “Blessed is the master, the god of Israel,
because he visited us and made a way for his people to be freed from slavery.
69 He brought us a voice that would lead to our salvation,
us citizens of the nation of King David, his servant
70 (as he spoke via the mouths of his holy prophets through the ages).
71 He saved us from our enemies,
and from the power of all the ones hating us,
72 to show mercy to our ancestors
and to remind them of his holy agreement,
73 that he had promised Abraham, our ancestor, that he would give us.
74 He rescued us from the power of our enemies,
so we could serve him without fear,
for the rest of our lives.
76 [ref]And you too my little child, will be called a prophet of the highest one—
going before the master to prepare his paths,
77 to give knowledge about salvation to his people
78 because God has compassion on us and mercy.
Thus the light from heaven will visit us
79 [ref]to shine on those in darkness and sitting in the shadow of death;
to guide us onto the road of peace.”
1:1 Paul’s thanking and praying
3 I thank my God every time that I hear you mentioned 4 and every time that I pray for you all, I’m always glad when I make my requests 5 because the good message united us in fellowship from the first day until now. 6 I’m sure of this: that the one who started a good work in you all will ensure that it’s continued through to the day of the return of Messiah Yeshua. 7 It’s right for me to be thinking this about you because I have you all in my heart. You received grace along with me so whether I’m in chains or defending and confirming the good message, we are fellow recipients. 8 God is my witness that I long for you with all the compassions of Messiah Yeshua.
9 And this is what I’m praying: that your love would grow more and more with knowledge and all insight 10 so that you all will approve what’s of value and so remain sincere and blameless until Messiah returns, 11 having been filled with the fruit of righteousness through Yeshua Messiah, honouring and praising God.
3:1 Yohan-the-immerser’s preaching
3 It was the fifteenth year of the rule of Caesar Tiberius when Pontius Pilate was the governor of Yudea and Herod was the ruler of the Galilean quarter. His brother Philip was the ruler of the Iturean quarter and of the region of Traconitis, and Lysanias was the ruler of the Abilene quarter. 2 Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests in Yerushalem, and this was the time when Yohan (son of Zechariah) began preaching God’s message in the wilderness. 3 He went around all the areas surrounding the Yordan River, telling the people that they could get immersed in water as a sign they were turning away from disobeying God and requesting forgiveness 4 [ref]just like the prophet Isayah had written:
‘The voice shouting in the wilderness
prepare Yahweh’s road,
5 Every valley will be filled up,
and every mountain and hill will be levelled off.
What’s crooked will be made straight,

4 Always be happy in the master. I’ll say that again: be happy. 5 Let your gentleness be visible to everyone. The master is close. 6 Don’t worry about anything, but handle all situations by letting God know your requests—praying and telling God your needs, and also thanking him. 7 Then God’s peace which is above human understanding will guard your hearts and your thinking in Messiah Yeshua.
7 [ref]Because of that, he was telling the crowds that went out there to be immersed by him, “Bunch of snakes! Who warned you all to flee from the severe anger that’s coming? 8 [ref]So then start demonstrating the qualities that show you have actually turned from your disobedience. And don’t start by telling me that you’re descendants of Abraham, because I can tell you all that God could make descendants out of these stones here. 9 [ref]The axe is already sitting at the base of the trees, so that every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.”
10 “What should we do then,” the crowds asked him.
11 “If you’ve got two jackets, give one to someone who doesn’t have one,” he replied, “and similarly if you’ve got food.”
12 [ref]Even some tax-collectors came to be immersed, and they asked Yohan, “Teacher, what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any extra on top of what you’ve been told to collect,” he said.
14 “And what about us too,” some soldiers inquired.
“Don’t bully people or falsely accuse anyone,” Yohan answered, “and be content with your wages.”
15 The people were expecting that the messiah might come to save them and started wondering in their minds if maybe it was Yohan 16 but he explained to them all, “I’ve been immersing you all in water, but there’s one coming who’s greater than me, in fact I’m not even worthy to unlace his sandals. He will immerse you all with the holy spirit and with fire. 17 He’ll hold the winnowing fork so he can clear out the threshing floor, gathering the wheat into his barn and burning up the chaff with a fire that never goes out.”
18 Yohan preached the good message to the people and also encouraged them to change for the better.
1:1 Maria’s visit to Elizabeth
39 Several days later, Maria determined that she’d go to the town in the hills of Yudea 40 where Zechariah and Elizabeth lived. She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth, 41 and as soon as Elizabeth heard the greeting, her baby in her womb kicked, and she was filled with the holy spirit 42 and she called out loudly, “Out of all women, you have been blessed and the baby in your womb has been blessed. 43 How could this happen to me—that the mother of my master would come and visit me! 44 You see, as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb kicked with excitement, 45 and the woman who believed that everything the master told her will happen, she will be blessed.”
1:46 Maria’s song of praise
47 and my spirit is so happy about God, my saviour,
48 [ref]because he noticed his humble servant girl.
Look now, all the future generations will consider that I was blessed
49 because the powerful one treated me incredibly,
50 He shows his mercy to multiple generations;
to those who honour him.
he scatters those who are proud in their hearts.
52 [ref]He knocks kings off their thrones,
and praises those who’re humble.
53 Those who’re hungry, he fills with good things,
but those who’re rich, he sends away empty handed.
54 He took good care of his servant, Israel,
55 [ref]as he spoke to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his descendants,
at the right time.”
56 So Maria stayed with Elizabeth for about three months before returning back to her own home.
5 That’s why when Yeshua came into the world, he said:[ref]
“You don’t want sacrifice and offering,
but you prepared a body for me.
6 You took no pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin.
7 Then I said, ‘Listen, it’s been written about me in the scroll of the scriptures. I have come, God, to do whatever you want.’ ”
8 Previously he had said, ‘You don’t want sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and offerings for sin, and you didn’t take pleasure in them,’ even though they’re offered according to the law. 9 Then he said, ‘Listen, I’m coming to do whatever you want.’ So he was terminating the first agreement in order to be able to establish the second one. 10 By that agreement, we are made holy once-and-for-all through the offering of Yeshua Messiah’s body.
22:1 Yeshua’s return
6 Then he said to me, “These messages are faithful and true, and the master, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his messenger out to show his slaves what’s planned to happen soon.”
7 “Yes, listen, I’m coming soon. Whoever follows the messages of the prophecy on this scroll will be blessed.”
8 I, Yohan, am the one who saw and heard all those things, and when I heard and saw them, I knelt down to worship at the feet of the messenger who showed them to me. 9 But he told me, Hey, no! I’m a fellow slave of you and of your brothers the prophets and of the ones who obey the words of this book. Worship God.” 10 Then he continued, “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, because the time is near. 11 Those who disobey God can continue to do so and those who’re filthy can continue to be so, but those who obey God should continue to obey, and those who’re godly should continue to be godly.”[ref]
12 (Yeshua says,) “Listen, I’m coming back soon, bringing my reward to distribute to each person according to their behaviour.[ref] 13 I’m the A and the Z—the first and the last—the beginning and the end.[ref]
14 “Blessed are those who’re washing their robes so that they’ll have authority over the tree of life (MEANING???) and so that they’ll be able to enter the city through the gates.[ref] 15 On the contrary, those outside the city are dogs and sorcerers, the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone loving and exhibiting dishonesty.
16 “I, Yeshua, have sent my messenger to explain these things to you concerning the churches. I am both David’s source and his descendant—the bright morning star.”[ref]
17 The spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’[ref]
Anyone who hears this should also say, ‘Come.’
Anyone who’s thirsty to live forever should come. Anyone who wants it can take the water that gives life free of charge.
22:18 Farewell
18 [ref]I am testifying to everyone who hears the prophecies written in this document: If anyone adds to these words, then God will add to them the plagues written in this document. 19 And if anyone takes away any of this prophetic document, then God will take away their share in the tree of life and in the holy city that’s written about in this document.
20 The one who testified about these things says: ‘Yes, I’m coming quickly.’
May it be so. Come, master Yeshua.
21 May the grace from the master Yeshua be with the godly people.

11 This is because God’s grace which offers salvation to all people has appeared 12 and teaches us that when we distance ourselves from ungodliness and worldly lusts, we can live sensibly and justly and devoutly in the present age. 13 Then we can look forward to the blessing of the majestic appearance of our great God and saviour, Yeshua the messiah 14 [ref]who gave himself for us in order to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify us into his chosen people, eager to do good things.
2:1 Yeshua’s birth in Bethlehem
2 At that time, Caesar Augustus sent a decree that everyone throughout the empire needed to register in a census. 2 (This census was conducted when Quirinius was the governor of Syria.) 3 Everyone had to officially register in the city where they were born.
4 Because Yosef was a descendant of King David, he left the town of Nazareth in the Galilee region and went down to David’s town of Bethlehem in Yudea 5 to register along with Maria, his pregnant fiancée. 6 While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to give birth 7 and so Maria bore her first son and wrapped him in strips of cloth and slept him in an empty feeding trough, because they had missed out on the guest room.
2:8 The shepherds and the messengers
8 In that same area, there were some shepherds staying out in the fields where they kept watch over their flocks at night. 9 A messenger sent by the master approached them, and the master’s radiance shone around them, and they were very frightened. 10 “Don’t be scared,” the messenger told them, “because I’m bringing you a good message that will bring great happiness to all people 11 because a saviour for all people was born today in David’s town. He’s the messiah—the master— 12 and this is how you’ll know him: you’ll find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and sleeping in a feeding trough.”
13 Then suddenly lots of heavenly soldiers joined the messenger, praising God and saying, 14 “Let all honour be given to God in the highest, and peace on earth to all people along with good will.”
15 Then as the messengers left them and went up into the sky, the shepherds said to each other, “Well, we’ll certainly go into Bethlehem so we can see what this was about that Yahweh has let us know about.”
16 So they hurried into town and asked around to find Maria and Yosef, and also the baby sleeping in the feeding trough. 17 When they met them, the explained what they’d been told about the young baby. 18 Everyone who heard this was amazed at what the shepherds told them, 19 but Maria treasured all of these messages in her heart and often thought about them. 20 Finally the shepherds returned back to their fields—they were worshipping and praising God for what they’d heard and how they’d seen it exactly like they’d been told.
3:1 Paul’s assignment to non-Jews
3 That’s the reason that I, Paul, am a prisoner due to my serving Yeshua the messiah for you non-Jews. 2 Certainly you have heard that God assigned me the task of passing on God’s grace to you. 3 He revealed his incredible plan as I wrote briefly previously 4 [ref]and which you are all able to read to understand my insight into the incredible plan about the messiah. 5 This plan wasn’t explained to humans in previous generations but has now God’s spirit has revealed it to his worthy missionaries and prophets. 6 Now non-Jews can have the same inheritance and become members of the same body and can share in the same promise that was the positive message of Yeshua the messiah.
7 I have become a servant of that message as a result of the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by means of the working of his power. 8 Although I was the least of the ones dedicated to this message, I was given the grace to preach this positive message to the non-Jews, to tell them about the endless riches of the messiah 9 and to enlighten everyone about the assignment of God’s incredible plan. God, the one who created everything, hid this plan away over the ages 10 so that the wide-ranging wisdom of God could be revealed now through the church to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms. 11 God did this according to his plan for the ages which he established in our master, Yeshua the messiah. 12 It’s through our faith in Yeshua that we can have boldness and confident access to God.
2:1 Easterners come to worship the new king
2 After Yeshua had been born in Bethlehem in the province of Yudea during the time of King Herod, watchers of signs arrived in Yerushalem from the east 2 and asked, “Where is the one born as king of the Jews, because we saw his star in the east and we came to worship him.”
3 Now when King Herod heard this, he was upset and all of Yerushalem as well. 4 He gathered together all of the chief priests and those who teach the religious law to the people and asked them where the Messiah was expected to be born.
5 And they told him, “It’ll be in Bethlehem in Yudea because the prophet wrote:[ref]
6 ‘You Bethlehem in the land of Yudah,
are not the most insignificant of the leaders of Yudah.
For a leader will come from you
who will guide my people Israel.’ ”
7 Then Herod sent for the watchers of signs and met secretly with them to determine when the star had first appeared. 8 Then he sent them on to Bethlehem with these instructions: “Go on and carefully investigate about the child and when you find him, report back to me so that I can also come and worship him.”
9 So when the king had finished speaking, they departed and the star which they could see in the east went ahead of them and stopped above the place where the child was. 10 Seeing this, the watchers of signs were very happy indeed. 11 As they entered the house, the saw the child with his mother Maria. They bowed low and worshipped him, then they opened their chests and presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
12 But because they had been warned in a dream not to return to King Herod, they went home again to their own country.
