Prologue

• 2 to understand sayings of understanding,
• 3 [fn] righteousness and justice and equity,
• 4 [fn] to the simple, knowledge and purpose[fn] to the young,
• 5  and the one who understands gain direction,[fn]
• 6  words of wisdom and their riddles.
• 7 is the beginning of knowledge; wisdom and instruction, fools despise.

Lecture Against Gang Behavior

• 8 [fn] your father’s instruction,and do not reject your mother’s teachings,
• 9 are a garland of favor for your head, and pendants for your neck.
10 
• 11  “Come with us!
• We shall lie in wait for blood;
• we shall ambush the innocent without cause.[fn]
• 12 [fn] we will swallow them alive and whole,[fn]
• 13  we shall fill our houses with booty,
• 14  there will be one purse for all of us.”
• 15 [fn] Keep your foot from their paths,
• 16  and they hurry to shed blood,
• 17 [fn] is the net scattered, in the sight of any[fn]
• 18 own blood. They ambush their own lives.
• 19 for gain— it will take the life of its possessors.

The Call of Lady Wisdom

• 20 in the squares she raises her voice.
• 21 [fn] she cries out, at the entrances of the gates in the city, she speaks her sayings:
• 22 [fn] O simple ones, will you love simplicity? And how long will scoffers delight in their scoffing,
• and fools hate knowledge?
• 23 [fn] Behold, I shall pour out my spirit upon you;
• I will make my words known to you.
• 24  I stretched out my hand, yet there is none who heeds.
• 25  and my reproof you are not willing to accept.
• 26 [fn] I will mock when panic[fn] comes upon you.
• 27  and your calamity arrives like a whirlwind,
• when distress and anguish come upon you,
• 28 [fn] me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but not find me.
• 29  and did not choose the fear of Yahweh,
• 30 to accept my counsel, they despised all my reproof.
• 31  and they shall be sated from their own schemes,
• 32  and the complacency of fools will destroy them.
• 33  and rest securely[fn] from dread and disaster.”

The Benefits of Wisdom

• and hide my commands with you,
• 2 in order to incline your ear toward wisdom, then you shall apply your heart to understanding.
• 3 [fn] if you lift[fn] your voice for insight,
• 4 and search her out[fn]
• 5  and the knowledge of God you will find.
• 6  from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
• 7 [fn] sound judgment, a shield for those who walk uprightly,
  • 8 in order to guard paths of justice and keep[fn] the way of his faithful ones.
  • 9  and uprightness—every good course—
  • 10  and knowledge will be pleasing to your soul.[fn]
  • 11  understanding will protect you,
  • 12 in order to deliver you from the way of evil,[fn]from a man who speaks devious things—
  • 13  to walk in ways of darkness,
  • 14  for they delight in the deviousness of evil,
  • 15 [fn] and devious in their paths;
  • 16 in order to deliver you from a strange woman, from a foreign woman who flatters[fn]with her sayings,
  • 17  and has forgotten the covenant of her God,
  • 18  and to the dead[fn] are her paths.
  • 19 Of all who go to her, none shall return, nor do they reach paths of life.
  • 20  and the paths of those who are righteous you shall keep.
  • 21 in the land,[fn]and those who are blameless[fn] will remain in it.
  • 22 and those who are treacherous will be uprooted from it.

Wisdom and Piety

• and may your heart guard my commands.
• 2  and peace they[fn] shall add to you.
• 3 [fn] and truth not forsake you; bind them around your neck,
• write them upon your heart.
• 4 [fn] in the eyes of God and humankind.
• 5 [fn] with all your heart; do not lean toward your own understanding.
• 6  and he will straighten your paths.
• 7  fear Yahweh and retreat from evil.
• 8 [fn] and refreshment for your body.
• 9 [fn] and from the firstfruits of all that will come to you,
• 10  and your vats shall burst with new wine.

Happy Is the One Who Finds Wisdom

• 11 Do not be weary of his reproof
• 12  as a father delights in his son.
• 13 is[fn] who finds wisdom, and one who obtains understanding.
• 14 [fn] income is better than the income of silver, and her revenue than that of gold.
• 15  and all your desires shall not compare with her.
• 16 is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
• 17 are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
• 18  those who take hold of her are considered happy.

Role of Wisdom in Creation and Society

• 19 he established the heavens in understanding.
• 20  and clouds dropped dew.
• 21 [fn] not escape from your[fn] may you keep sound wisdom and prudence.
• 22 [fn] and adornment[fn] for your neck.
• 23  and your foot will not stumble.
• 24 [fn] and if you lie down, then your sleep shall be sweet.

• 33 is on the house of the wicked, and the abode of the righteous ones he blesses.
• 34  but to those who are humble, he gives favor.
• 35  but stubborn fools, disgrace.

The Father’s Wisdom

• and be attentive in order to know insight.
• 2  do not forsake my teaching.
• 3  tender and alone before my mother,
• 4  “May your heart hold fast to my words;
• guard my commandments and live.
• 5  do not forget and do not turn from the sayings of my mouth.
• 6  love her and she will keep you.
• 7  With all that is in your possession, gain insight.
• 8  she will honor you if you embrace her.
• 9  she shall bestow a crown of glory upon you.”

The Right Path

• 10 and the years of your life shall be great.
• 11  I have led you in the path of uprightness.
• 12 [fn] your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble.
• 13  Guard her, for she is your life.
• 14  do not walk in the way of those who do evil.
• 15  turn away from it and pass by.
• 16  and they are robbed of their sleep if they do not cause stumbling.
• 17  and they drank the wine of violence.
• 18 is like the light of dawn, leading and shining until the day[fn]
• 19 is like deep darkness; they do not know what they stumble over.

Staying the Course

• 20 to my sayings incline your ear.
• 21 [fn] keep them in the midst of your heart.
• 22  and healing[fn]
• 23  for from it comes the source[fn] of life.
• 24 [fn] and abolish[fn] from yourself.
• 25 [fn] and your gaze be straight before you.
• 26  and all your ways be sure.
• 27  remove your foot from evil.
• and to my understanding incline your ear;
• 2 in order to keep prudence, and knowledge will guard your lips.
• 3  and smoother than oil is her mouth.[fn]
• 4  sharp as a two-edged sword.
• 5 to death; her steps take hold of Sheol.[fn]
• 6 [fn] the path of life;her ways wander, and she does not know it.

Do Not Commit Adultery Against Wisdom

• 7 do not depart from the sayings of my mouth.
• 8  and do not go near to the door of her house,
• 9  and your years to the merciless,
• 10 their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner,
• 11  when your flesh and body are consumed,
• 12  and I despised reproof!”
• 13  and I did not incline my ear to my instructors!
• 14 [fn] ruin[fn] in the midst of the assembly and congregation.”
• 15 own cistern and flowing waters from inside your own well.
• 16  In the streets, shall there be streams of water?
• 17  and not for strangers who are with you.
• 18  and rejoice in the wife[fn] of your youth.
• 19 She is a deer of love and a doe of grace; may her breasts satisfy you[fn]
• by her love may you be intoxicated continually.
• 20  and embrace the bosom of a foreigner?
• 21 are[fn] and all his paths he examines.
• 22  and in the vanity of his sin he shall be caught.
• 23 [fn] discipline, and in the greatness of his folly he shall be lost.

Against Pledges

• if you have bound[fn] to the stranger,
• 2 if you are snared by the sayings of your mouth, if you are caught by the sayings of your mouth,
• 3  for you have come into[fn]
• Go, humble yourself, plead with your neighbor.
• 4  or slumber to your eyelids.
• 5  or like a bird from the hand of a fowler.

Against Sloth

• 6 Consider its ways and be wise.
• 7  officer, or ruler.
• 8  in the harvest, it gathers its sustenance.
• 9  When will you rise up from your sleep?
• 10  a little folding of the hands for rest—
• 11 [fn] shall your poverty come, and what you lack like an armed man.

Against Worthlessness

• 12 goes around with[fn]
• 13  pointing in his fingers,
• 14  at all times he will send out discord.[fn]
• 15 [fn] suddenly shall his calamity come; in a moment he will be damaged and there is no healing.[fn]

What Yahweh Hates

• 16 things Yahweh hates, and seven things are abominations of his soul:[fn]
• 17 and hands that shed innocent blood,
• 18  feet that hurry to run to evil,[fn]
• 19  and sends out discord[fn] between brothers.

Commandment and Instruction as Guardians

• 20 the commandment of your father, and do not disregard the instruction of your mother.
• 21  tie them upon your neck.
• 22 [fn] she[fn] will lead you,[fn] she will watch over you,
• and when you awake, she will converse with you.
• 23 like a lamp is a commandment, and instruction is light, and the way of life[fn] is the reproof of discipline,
• 24 in order to preserve you from an evil woman,[fn]from the smoothness of the tongue of a[fn]
• 25  may she not capture you with her eyelashes.
• 26 the price of a woman, a prostitute,[fn]is the price of a loaf of bread, but the[fn] hunts precious life.

Warning Against Relations with a Married Woman

• 27 and his clothes not burn?
• 28  will his feet not be burned?
• 29  any who touches her shall not go unpunished.
• 30 People do not despise a thief when he steals to fill himself[fn] when he is hungry.
• 31 if he is found, he will pay sevenfold, every possession of his house he shall give.
• 32 with a woman lacks[fn] he destroys himself[fn] who does it.
• 33  and his disgrace will not be wiped out.
• 34 is the fury of a husband, and he will not show restraint on the day of revenge.

Warning Against the Strange Woman

• store my commandments with you.
• 2  and my teaching like the[fn]
• 3  write them on the tablet of your heart.
• 4 [fn] “you are my sister,” and you shall call insight,[fn] “[fn]
• 5 In order to guard yourself from[fn] from the foreigner who[fn]
• 6  through my lattice, I looked down.
• 7  I observed among the youth,
• a young man lacking[fn]
• 8 [fn] her corner, and he takes the road to her house,
• 9 the day’s evening, in the midst of night and the darkness.
• 10 comes to meet him with the garment of a prostitute[fn] and[fn]
• 11  her feet do not stay at her house.
• 12 [fn] every corner she lies in wait.
• 13 [fn] him and kissed him. Her face was impudent, and she said to him,

• 16 With coverings I have adorned my couch, spreads of the linen of Egypt;

• but he does not know that[fn]

Reiteration of the Warning Against a Strange Woman

• 24 and be attentive to the sayings of my mouth.
• 25  do not stray into her path.
• 26  and countless[fn] are all of her killings.
• 27 [fn] are her house, descending to chambers of death.

Wisdom Calls

• and understanding raise its voice?
• 2 [fn] beside the road, at the crossroads she stands.
• 3  at the entrance of doors, she cries out:
• 4 [fn] I call, and my cry is to the children of humankind.
• 5  fools, learn[fn]
• 6  and upright things from the opening of my lips.
• 7  and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
• 8 are in righteousness; none of them are twisted and crooked.
• 9  and upright to those who find knowledge.
• 10  may you choose knowledge rather than choice gold.
• 11  and all desires shall not compare with her.
• 12  and I find knowledge and discretion.
• 13 is hatred of evil, pride, and arrogance and an evil way.
• And I hate a mouth of perversity.
• 14 [fn] are mine; I am understanding,[fn]
• 15  and rulers decree righteousness.
• 16  and nobles—all judges of righteousness.
• 17 [fn] and those who seek me diligently shall find me.
• 18 are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness.
• 19 [fn] even refined gold, and my yield than choice silver.
• 20  in the midst of paths of justice,
• 21 in order to endow those who love me with wealth, and I will fill their treasuries.

Wisdom at Creation

• 22 [fn] me,the first of his ways, before his acts[fn]
• 23 the first, from the beginning[fn] of the earth.
• 24  when there were no springs of[fn] water.
• 25  before hills, I was brought forth.
• 26  or the first dust of the world,
• 27 [fn] the heavens, there I was,[fn] a circle upon the face of the deep,
• 28 [fn] skies from above, when he founded fountains of the deep,
• 29 [fn] his limits to the sea, that waters shall not transgress his[fn]

Benefits of Following Wisdom

• 32 happy are those who will keep my ways.
• 33  do not neglect it.
• 34 is the person who listens to me, in order to keep watch at my doors day by day,
• in order to guard the frames of my entrances.
• 35 is he who finds[fn] life,and he obtains favor from Yahweh.
• 36 [fn] All those who hate me love death.”

Wisdom’s Banquet

• she has hewn her seven pillars.
• 2  and also set her table.
• 3 [fn] she calls upon the wings of the high places of town,
• 4 is simple, let him turn here.” As for the one who lacks[fn] she says to him,
• 5  drink with the wine I have mixed.
• 6  walk in the way of understanding.”
• 7  and he who rebukes the wicked[fn]
• 8  rebuke the wise and he will love you.
• 9 [fn] a righteous one and he will increase learning.

Foolishness’ Banquet

• 10 and knowledge of the Holy One,[fn] insight.
• 11 and years of life shall multiply for you.
• 12  and if you scoff, alone you shall bear it.
• 13  simple, and does not know[fn]
• 14  upon a throne at the high places of town,
• 15 in order to call to those who pass by the road, those who go straight on their way:
• 16  As for he who lacks[fn] she says to him,
• 17  and bread of secrecy is pleasant.”
• 18 [fn] are there, in the depths of Sheol[fn] are her guests.

Proverbs of Solomon

• A wise child makes a father glad,
  • but a foolish child grieves his mother.
  • 2  but righteousness delivers from death.
  • 3 [fn] to go hungry, but the craving of the wicked he will thwart.
  • 4  but the hand of the diligent enriches.

  • 32 the acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked, the perverse.

  • 6 are an ambush of blood, but the mouth of the upright delivers them.

  • 4 [fn] of the lazy craves, but there is nothing, but the person of diligence is richly supplied.

  • 6  but wickedness will overthrow sin.
  • 7 [fn] another who pretends to be poor but has wealth.
  • 8 is his wealth, but the poor does not receive a threat.
  • 9  but the lamp of the wicked will die out.
  • 10  and wisdom is with those who take advice.
  • 11 gained from haste[fn] will dwindle,but he who gathers[fn] will increase it.
  • 12 [fn] sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
  • 13  but he who respects a commandment will be rewarded.
  • 14 is a fountain of life, in order to avoid the snares of death.
  • 15  but the way of the faithless is coarse.
  • 16  but the fool will display folly.
  • 17  but an envoy of the faithful brings healing.
  • 18 belong to him who ignores instruction, but he who guards reproof will be honored.
  • 19 [fn] will be sweet to the soul, but an abomination of fools is turning from evil.
  • 20  but as for the companion of fools, he will suffer harm.
  • 21  but the righteous[fn]
  • 22 [fn] and stored up for the righteous is the wealth of a sinner.
  • 23 There is much food in the field of the poor, but[fn] by[fn]
  • 24  but he who loves him[fn] discipline.
  • 25 [fn] but the belly of the wicked will lack.
  • but the foolish tears it down with her hands.
  • 2  but he who is devious in his ways displeases him.
  • 3  but the lips of the wise preserve them.
  • 4 [fn] oxen the manger is empty, but an abundance of crops comes by the strength of an ox.[fn]
  • 5 but he who breathes out falsehood is a witness of deceit.
  • 6  but knowledge[fn]
  • 7 [fn] for you will not come to know[fn]
  • 8  but the folly of fools is deceit.
  • 9 [fn] the guilt offering, but among the upright, it is favorable.
  • 10 [fn] knows the bitterness of its soul,[fn] but in its joy, it will not share itself with a stranger.
  • 11  but the tent of the upright will flourish.
  • 12 that seems upright[fn] a man, but its end is the way of death.
  • 13  and the end of joy may be grief.
  • 14  and[fn] so shall a good man.
  • 15  but the clever will consider his step.
  • 16  but the fool throws off restraint and is confident.
  • 17 [fn] will act foolishly, and the man who schemes will be hated.
  • 18 with folly, but the clever are crowned with knowledge.
  • 19  and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
  • 20  but the lovers of the rich are many.
  • 21  but he who has mercy on the poor blesses him.
  • 22  But loyalty and faithfulness belong to those who plan good.

  • 24 is their wealth; the folly of fools is folly.

  • 26  and for his children, there will be refuge.

  • 28  but without a population, a prince is ruined.
  • 29 He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but the hasty of spirit[fn] exalts folly.
  • 30 [fn] of tranquility[fn] is life to the flesh, but causes bones of passion to rot.
  • 31  but he who has mercy on the poor honors him.
  • 32  and the righteous will find refuge in his death.
  • 33 [fn] of him who has understanding, wisdom rests, but even in the midst of fools it becomes known.
  • 34  but sin is a reproach to a people.
  • 35 is for the servant who deals wisely, but his wrath will be on him who acts shamefully.
  • but a word of trouble will stir[fn]
  • 2  but the mouth of fools will pour out folly.
  • 3  keep watch over the evil and the good.
  • 4 [fn] of tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it[fn] causes a break in spirit.
  • 5  but he who guards reproof is prudent.
  • 6 In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, but the income of the wicked brings trouble.
  • 7  but the heart[fn] of fools, not so.
  • 8  but the prayer of the upright is his delight.
  • 9  but he who pursues righteousness he will love.
  • 10 belongs to him who forsakes the way; he who hates a rebuke will die.
  • 11 [fn] and Abaddon[fn] are before Yahweh,[fn] the hearts of the children of men!
  • 12 [fn] to the wise he will not go.
  • 13 [fn] of gladness will make good[fn] but in sorrow of heart[fn] a spirit is broken.
  • 14  but the faces of fools, they[fn] will feed on folly.
  • 15 are hard, but goodness of heart[fn] is a continuous feast.
  • 16 is little with the fear of Yahweh than great treasure and trouble with it.[fn]
  • 17 is a dinner of vegetables when[fn] loveis there than a fattened ox and hatred with it.[fn]
  • 18  but he who is slow to[fn] he will calm contention.
  • 19 [fn] but the path of the upright is a highway.

  • 23 belongs to a man with answers in his mouth, and a word in its time, how good it is!
  • 24 leads upward for him who has insight, in order to turn away from Sheol below.

  • 27 For he who gives to the poor, there is no lacking, but for he[fn] who turns his eyes,there are many curses.
  • 28 the rising of the wicked, humankind will be hidden, and with their perishing, the righteous will multiply.
  • suddenly he will be broken, and there will not be healing.
  • 2  but when the wicked are ruling, people will groan.
  • 3  but the friend of prostitutes[fn] will squander his wealth.
  • 4 to a land, but a man of bribes will ruin it.
  • 5  is spreading a net for his feet.
  • 6 is a snare, but the righteous will sing and rejoice.[fn]
  • 7 The righteous knows the case of the poor, but the wicked does not understand knowledge.
  • 8  but the wise turn away wrath.
  • 9 If a wise man goes to court with a foolish man, then there is rankling and ridicule,[fn] but there is no relief.
  • 10 the blameless, and they seek the life of the upright.[fn]
  • 11 [fn] but the wise holds back in quiet.
  • 12  all his officials are wicked.
  • 13 this in common: Yahweh gives[fn]
  • 14 to the poor, his throne will be established forever.
  • 15 [fn] will give wisdom, but a neglected child is disgraced by his mother.
  • 16  but the righteous will look on his downfall.
  • 17  and they will give delight to your soul.[fn]
  • 18  but as for he who guards instruction, happiness is his.
  • 19  for he will understand, but there is no giving heed.
  • 20  there is more hope for a fool than him.
  • 21 [fn]
  • 22  and the owner of anger, much transgression.
  • 23  and the lowly of spirit will obtain honor.
  • 24 [fn] a curse he will hear, but not disclose.
  • 25  but he who trusts in Yahweh will be secure.
  • 26 [fn] of a ruler, but from Yahweh[fn]
  • 27  but the[fn] is an abomination to the wicked.

The Oracle of Agur

• Thus says the man to Ithiel, to Ithiel, and Ucal:[fn]
• 2 am more stupid than a man, and the understanding of humankind is not for me.
• 3  nor will I know knowledge of the Holy One.[fn]
• 4 to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in the hollow of his hand?
• Who has wrapped water in a[fn] garment?
• Who has established all the ends of the earth?
• What is his name and what is the name of his child?
• For surely you know.
• 5 is flawless; he is a shield for him who takes refuge in him.
• 6  lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.
• 7  do not deny me before I die:
• 8 [fn] far from me; do not give me poverty or wealth;
• provide me with food only for my need.
• 9 him and say “Who is Yahweh?”
• Or[fn] I will be poor and will steal
  • and profane the name of my God.
  • 10  or else he will curse you and you will be guilty.
  • 11 There is a generation that will curse its father, and its mother it will not bless.
  • 12 There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, but from its filthiness it will not be cleansed.
  • 13 There is a generation—how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids they will lift.
  • 14 There is a generation whose teeth are swords, and its jawbones, knives,
• in order to devour the poor from the earth[fn]
  • and the needy from humankind.
  • 15 there are two daughters; “Give, give!” they cry.
• As for three of these, they are not satisfied;
  • as for four, they do not say enough.
  • 16 [fn] and barrenness of womb, the land is not satisfied with water,
  • and fire does not say “enough!”
  • 17 that mocks a father and scorns the obedience of a mother—
• the ravens of the valley will peck it out,
  • and the offspring of vultures will eat it.
  • 18 too wonderful for me, and four, I do not understand them:
  • 19  the way of a snake on a rock,
  • the way of a ship in the heart of the sea,
  • and the way of a man with a young woman.
  • 20  she eats and wipes her mouth,
  • and says “I have not done wrong.”
  • 21 things the earth[fn] trembles,and under four, it is not able to bear up:
  • 22  and a fool when he is satisfied with food;
  • 23  and a maid when she succeeds her mistress.
  • 24 are four small things on the earth, and they are[fn]
  • 25 are a people who are not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer;
  • 26 are a people who are not mighty, yet they set their house on the rock;
  • 27  yet it marches in rank;
  • 28 can seize with hands, yet it is in palaces of kings.
  • 29 are three things that are magnificent of stride, and four that are magnificent when moving:
  • 30 [fn] but he will not turn back from[fn]
  • 31  and a king whose army is with him.
  • 32  and if you have devised evil, put your hand to your mouth.
  • 33  and pressing the nose produces blood,
  • so pressing[fn] produces strife.

The Oracle of King Lemuel

• that his mother taught him:
• 2  And what, son of my vows?
• 3  and your ways to destroy kings.
• 4 It is not for the kings, O Lemuel; drinking wine is not for the kings,
• nor is strong drink for rulers.
• 5  and he will pervert the rights[fn] of all the[fn]
• 6  and wine to those[fn]
• 7  and his misery he will not remember any more.
• 8  for the rights[fn] of all the[fn]
• 9  and defend the poor and needy.

An Excellent Woman[fn]

• 10 [fn] of excellence,[fn] who will find?For her worth is far more than precious jewels.
• 11 [fn] trusts in her, and gain he will not lack.
• 12  all the days of her life.
• 13  and she works with the diligence of[fn]
• 14  from far off she brings her food;[fn]
• 15 it is still night, and gives food to her household,
• and tasks to her servant girls.
• 16  from the fruit of[fn] she plants a vineyard.
• 17  and makes her arms strong.
• 18 is good; her lamp does not go out in the night.
• 19 [fn] and her palms hold a spindle.
• 20  and her hand she reaches out to the needy.
• 21 when it snows, for[fn] is clothed in crimson.
• 22  her clothing is fine linen and purple.
• 23 [fn] is known at the gates, in his seat among the elders of the land.
• 24  and she supplies sashes for the merchants.
• 25  and she laughs[fn]
• 26  and instruction of kindness is upon her tongue.
• 27  and the bread of idleness she will not eat.
• 28  her husband[fn] also, and he praises her;
• 29 [fn] but[fn] all of them.”
• 30 [fn] is deceit and beauty[fn]is vain;[fn]but a woman who fears Yahweh shall be praised.
• 31  and may they praise her works in the city gates.
